The Underground Dimension

The Underground is a separate mining dimension designed for large-scale resource gathering. It contains its own set of underground biomes and a much denser cave network than the Overworld.

Do not log out in the Underground. The Underground elevator can be moved occasionally, to ensure there are fresh ores available consistently. Administrators ensure that no one who is currently online is in the Underground when this happens. If you log out in the Underground, you may log back in very far away from the elevator and have no practical way to return.

Entering the Underground

You enter the Underground using the elevator near Ignia Market Square. The elevator is located at (x -1500; z 1300) in the Overworld, but its location in the Underground is not fixed. Make sure to note where you enter, so you can find your way back!

The elevator runs on a simple schedule and makes a round trip every 10 minutes. At times where the minutes on the clock are divisible by 10, the elevator goes down to the Underground. At times where the minutes are divisible by 5 but not by 10, the elevator goes up to the Overworld. In other words, it departs every five minutes, alternating direction each time.

Biomes

The Underground has its own set of biomes. In general, Underground biomes generate with many more caves than Overworld terrain, which makes exploration-based mining much more effective than strip mining.

  • Underground is the default biome and is extremely common.
  • Deep Underground is a common biome where deepslate appears at higher levels than in the Overworld.
  • Very Deep Underground is found in the deepest layers and contains large amounts of bedrock. Strip mining is not practical here, but valuable ores can still be found through cave exploration.
  • Deep Dark Underground is similar in character to the Overworld Deep Dark. It can contain ancient cities and the warden.
  • Fungal Underground is a rare biome filled with mycelium and is usually found closer to the top of the Underground.
  • Lush Underground extends the idea of lush caves into the Underground, with lush vegetation and large clay deposits.
  • Underground Desert is typically found nearer the top of the Underground and contains large amounts of sand.
  • Underground Mesa is an underground terracotta biome that is often found near Underground Deserts.
  • Wet Underground is a dripstone-and-water biome with dense water features and dripstone formations.

Ore spawning

Ores in the Underground follow the same basic spawning rules as the Overworld, with three differences:

  • Ores that generate exposed in caves are rarer than in the Overworld. This is compensated by the Underground generating many more caves.
  • Lapis ore and deepslate lapis ore spawn at double the Overworld rate.
  • Iron, copper and gold ore spawn three times as frequently as in the Overworld.
