Equipment quality
Two items made from the same material can have different quality. Quality adds a bonus or penalty to a weapon’s attack rating or each armour piece’s defence rating. Better quality means dealing more damage or taking less. For material ratings and their effect on damage, see Weapons & armour.
Newly made equipment with variable quality starts with Unknown Quality. Using it reveals its quality and exact bonus over time. Weapons reveal through dealing damage, and armour through taking damage. Higher-quality equipment needs more use to reveal its quality.
Quality grades
Upgrading a copper piece of equipment to iron gives it a quality rating between and , with values near zero more likely. This quality rating is added to or subtracted from the piece’s base attack or defence rating. For a full armour set, the four pieces’ quality values add up to between −192 and +192 defence rating.
Each range of quality values has a name, called its grade. For example, quality from +17 to +32 belongs to the Masterful grade. The chart shows how likely each quality value and grade is.
Improving equipment
You can improve equipment’s quality at an anvil by combining diamond or netherite pieces, or by adding iron nuggets to iron equipment. The quality of all equipment used must be revealed first.
Combining equipment
You can combine two of the same diamond or netherite item at any grade.
Combining improves the left piece by +2 when the donor has the same or a better grade, or +1 when it is one grade lower, capped at +48. Donors more than one grade lower do not improve quality. The right piece is consumed.
Using iron nuggets
You can also improve the quality of iron equipment using iron nuggets up to +16, the end of Superior.
| Current grade | Material per +1 quality |
|---|---|
| Abysmal | 2 nuggets |
| Awful | 6 nuggets |
| Inferior | 18 nuggets or 2 ingots |
| Standard | 18 nuggets or 2 ingots |
| Superior | 162 nuggets, 18 ingots or 2 blocks |
Each quality upgrade costs twice its resulting quality in XP levels, with a minimum of one.
