Griefing

Like on most Minecraft servers, griefing is not allowed on Alinea. Because griefing is a very broad term, with many people having different ideas of what it entails, we will take a closer look at what we consider griefing on Alinea.

Griefing, generally speaking, is any unauthorised act, whether intentional or negligent, that results in damage or destruction to another player’s property or the environment. This can be anything from breaking someone’s windows to blowing up their house with TNT. Griefing can be done with malicious intent, but it can also be done accidentally. If you weren’t paying attention and a creeper blew up on you, destroying your friend’s house, that’s still griefing.

Types of Griefing

To help figure out appropriate consequences for griefing, we differentiate between different types of griefing. These types are not exhaustive, but they cover the most common forms of griefing we see on Alinea.

Property Griefing and Vandalism

Property griefing is any act of griefing that affects the property of another player. When this griefing was also done with malicious intent, we call it property vandalism. Property griefing and vandalism can be minor, or major, depending on how easy it is to fix and how much damage was done.

Environmental Griefing

Environmental griefing is any act of griefing that adversely affects the environment of the server. This can be anything from deforestation, to carving out a mountain without proper terraforming. We also differentiate between different types of environmental griefing, mostly depending on the scale and rationale behind the griefing.

  • “Minor Environmental Griefing” is any act of environmental griefing that can be easily undone. This could be something like leaving behind nerd poles, not chopping down the entire tree while gathering wood, or not fixing creeper holes.
  • “Construction-Related Environmental Griefing” is any act of environmental griefing that is done for the purpose of building a structure, that is not easily reversible. Think carving out a mountain to make space for a castle, but not properly terraforming it so it looks natural, or blocking a river to put a farm over it.
  • “Resource-Exploitation Related Environmental Griefing” is any act of environmental griefing that is done for the purpose of gathering or exploiting resources on a significant scale, that is not easily reversible. This could be something like stripping a beach of all its sand, or digging out a large chunk of a badlands biome for terracotta.
  • “Major Environmental Griefing” is any act of environmental griefing that cannot be easily undone, and wasn’t done for any of the reasons above. This could be something like blowing up a mountain with TNT for fun, or flooding a large area with water.

Terrorism

The most severe kind of griefing is terrorism. It is any act of vandalism that is intended to cause widespread harm against an entire community. This encompasses acts like blowing up an entire server town, or covering a public area in lava.

Penalties

Penalties are given out on a case-by-case basis. Still, below we provide a table that shows the most typical allocation of sanctions, for each type of griefing.

The table provided is a guideline, and the server administration may deviate from it. For example, if players do not spontaneously assume liability for damages they cause, even if small, the administration may be more likely to impose additional penalties.

Reporting Griefing

Have you been the victim of griefing? In cases of minor property griefing, first try to reach out to the griefer to see if they are willing to fix the damage. If they are not, or if the griefing was more severe, please contact the server administration by creating a ticket on our Discord server. Make sure to provide as much information as possible. We will try our best to help you out as soon as possible.
