Market Square

Market Square is Alinea’s designated province for player shops. While players are free to sell items anywhere in the world, places that are dedicated to the sale of items must be located in Market Square.

The map below shows all shops on the Market Square.

Shop types

Market Square offers several shop formats to accommodate different kinds of sellers, from short-term pop-ups to large, permanent shops. Each format differs in size, duration, cost, and how much you are allowed to customise it.

Choose the smallest format that fits your needs. If your shop grows, you can move to a larger type later.

  • Starter Barrels are short-term pop-up selling spots intended for new players or one-off sales. They are free to use, but only come with two barrels and can only be used for three days at a time. After this period, you may move to a different pair of Starter Barrels.
  • Starter Stalls are small shops with a fixed design along the docks of Market Square. They are the simplest paid option for running a shop and can be kept for as long as rent is paid. They cost 0,05 gc per week, and their layout and storage are fixed.
  • Market Plots are larger, fully customisable plots of land within Market Square where you can build your own market stall. Rent varies by plot size and location.
  • Shopfronts are large shop units intended for established businesses with a wide catalogue of goods that cannot fit within the smaller shop types. The exterior of a shopfront is fixed to preserve the look of Market Square, while the interior can be fully customised. Shopfronts are limited in number and are typically assigned manually.

Claiming a shop

How you claim a shop depends on the shop type.

For Starter Barrels, claiming happens on-site. If a pair of barrels is unclaimed, or if the existing claim started over 5 days ago, you may claim it by filling in your username and the current date on the provided sign. When you are done, clear your name/date from the sign and remove your items.

For Starter Stalls and Market Plots, availability is managed through the Market Square rent room in Town Hall. If a plot is available, you may claim it by writing your name on its sign. The sign is authoritative: if your name is not on it, the plot is not considered claimed by you. You will pay your market rent weekly in the barrel attached to that sign.

For Shopfronts, claiming is handled manually. If a shopfront is available, open a ticket to request it. You can see which ones are available in the Market Square rent room in Town Hall.

You can occupy only one pair of Starter Barrels at a time. All other shop types are unlimited.

Shop availability changes frequently. To check what is currently available, visit the Market Square rent room in Town Hall for Starter Stalls, Market Plots, and Shopfronts. For Starter Barrels, check the signs at the barrels themselves.

Paying rent

Most shop types require weekly rent. Rent is typically collected on Monday (Brussels time), but may occasionally be collected later. If you want to be safe, pay before Monday. The current rates are shown in the Market Square rent room and should be treated as authoritative. We will announce any changes to these rates.

Shop rules

The following rules apply to all shops in Market Square.

  • Rent must be paid on time. If rent is not paid by the weekly deadline, the plot may be reclaimed and any items left behind may be removed or lost.
  • If your name is not on the required sign for your plot type, the plot is not considered yours and may be claimed by someone else. Co-ownership is allowed, but only one name may appear on the sign. The listed owner remains responsible for rent and compliance.
  • Shops are expected to be actively used and restocked. If a plot is left unused for an extended time, it may be reclaimed to free space for others. A heads-up will be given first.
  • The Starter Barrels and Starter Stalls have fixed designs that may not be altered, while Market Plots and Shopfronts may be customised. Market Plots must stay within their plot boundaries, and cannot expand underground or above a height of five meters. Shopfronts may only be customised on the inside; you may not modify the exterior or dig underground. Each shopfront includes a basement, which may not be expanded or dug deeper.
  • Shops must be properly lit to prevent mob spawning.
